There are so many genres of books available online these days. If you're like me, romance of all kinds is likely one of your favorites.
I totally love supporting authors by buying books at full price.
Sometimes, though, I'd love to check out authors I've never read before or an unexpected expense came up and the budget is a bit tight.
Luckily, there are a ton of free or reduced-price ebooks out there daily whether you enjoy contemporary romance, historical romance, fantasy romance, young adult reads, or perhaps something a bit spicier.
Here are some of my favorite places to get free books to read through the Amazon Kindle app.

Where To Get Free Books
1. Romance Bookworms Stuff Your Kindle - This free book event only happens 4 times a year.
However, there are so many free books available on Stuff Your Kindle Day that you'll likely have more than enough books to read over 3 months!
Since there are so many books available, I really love that they break them down into categories.
So, if you're like me and historical romance isn't your first pick but you really enjoy fantasy romance, you can easily make sure you grab all of those first and then grab the others if you have time.
Next known event date: Wednesday September 20 - Friday September 22. That's right, this time Stuff Your Kindle Day lasts for three days!
Keep in mind that books prices can fluctuate at any time so double check that your chosen books are indeed showing as free when you go to purchase them.
Also, if a book doesn't show for free make sure the Kindle version is selected. Sometimes the link leads to the paperback or hardcover versions which aren't free.
Note: If you just can't get them all in one day it can be worth it to take the time to check them out within a day or two after the event day is over.
While the books are only advertised as being free for one day, many, but not all, authors seem to extend this for more than one day.
2. FreeBooksy - This is another favorite site of mine to find free books.
You can either browse the site for free books or, in my preference, get a daily (sometimes twice a day) newsletter sent to you from the categories you select.
I really like that you can choose the romance subgenres of your liking such as suspense, sweet, steamy, and even erotic.
There are also other genres you can select like sci-fi and non-fiction, which I appreciate because I can also get free cookbooks.
3. Red Feather Romance - This is another site I check daily for romance books.
This site is only about romance books but it is affiliated with FreeBooksy so you may see some overlapping titles.
Just like with FreeBooksy, you can find free books on both the website or opt-in to get the daily newsletter(s) emailed to you with specific subgenres.
Red Feather Romance does feature both free and discounted romance books so double check any prices before purchasing. A lot of the discounted books are only $.99, though!
4. BookBub - BookBub is an awesome resource for any reader, and not just for free books.
You can select certain book genres you enjoy and then further categories, like mostly free books, and then get a newsletter sent to you daily or weekly with those deals.
You can also follow authors you like reading to get notifications when their books are free or on sale, or if they release a new book.
You can even create a wishlist of books to be notified when they go on sale.
It's also a great place to find new authors to check out as you can select specific categories and have authors suggested to you.
5. Amazon - I don't use this method much because I find more than enough free books from the sites above.
But, you can find free books on Amazon with a little work.
Note that this works best on a desktop. You can use a mobile browser with a bit more work. This will not work in the Amazon app.
First, go to the Kindle book section on Amazon. From there, select categories and then romance. From there you can select one of the subcategories under romance.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select see all results. Then you should be able to select sort by and then choose Price: Low to High.
After that, you should see several free books available for purchase.
This can be a great way to find new to you authors as authors do usually have to pay to be featured on the sites that list free and discounted books.
6. Newsletters and ARCs - Read a book that you really enjoyed? Be sure to follow the author by signing up for their newsletter and/or social media.
Usually, authors will leave a link to sign up for their newsletter or to follow them on social media at the end of most books that you can find to read on Kindle.
Why should you do this? Won't you just get spammed?
Not only do authors often give free bonus content to newsletter subscribers, but it's also a great way for them to let you know about books they have on sale or potential limited-time freebies, along with new releases.
Some authors also offer ARC signups through their newsletter and/or social media. An ARC is short for an advanced reader copy.
Before the official release date, the author will send selected ARC readers a copy of their book for free in exchange for a review on Amazon and/or other platforms.
Either way, most free books from this method are given in formats that can be uploaded to your Kindle books account.
Common Questions About Free Books
If you're new to looking for free books you may have some questions. Here are some of the most common questions about free books.
Do I have to have a Kindle device to read free books?
If you're not familiar with the Kindle app, you don't have to have a Kindle device, and can instead use the free app on most phones, tablets, and even your desktop or laptop - all for free.
Pretty much all romance titles will be available on Kindle, but some will also be available on other platforms like Apple.
What's the catch? Are the books really free? Is it just for a limited time?
Yes, the books really are free. Unless there is a stipulation stating that you have to sign up for something (like a newsletter), the free book sources listed here are completely free.
Once you purchase the book, it's yours and you don't have to return it. If you delete it from your Kindle library you may have to repurchase it, and it may not be free at that point in time.
Note that if you have a Kindle Unlimited subscription some of the books included there can also be purchased for free.
Make sure that you purchase the book for free and then you won't have to use one of your borrowed book slots to read it.
Why can't I purchase the book for free? It shows a price of $x.
Due to the way some algorithms work on sites like Amazon free deals may expire quicker than expected. So, always double-check that the price is $0.00.
For Amazon, you also can't purchase ebooks through the app unless you are borrowing them through Kindle Unlimited.
If you accidentally purchase a book you thought was going to be free but it wasn't, you have a short window to return the book.
I'm not adding a timeframe as Amazon could change this at any time. If you do this too often, they may deny your return requests. They may also deny your return if you read most the book before initiating a return.
